2015 to date (Work In Progress)
Collage and pen drawing on paper
Reincarnation acts as the backdrop of this series, and it came about as a result of my solo exhibition
“Hairvolution” in 2014 from where I began exploring this concept along the lines of voids and space,
subjects that are pertinent to reincarnation.
With the Hybid series I have moved forward from not only exploring reincarnation’s concept of rebirth,
which is the crux of the subject, but also now re-examining it through the idea of transitioning and
moving within spaces; re occupying bodies.
Hence the Hybrid series deals with the complexities of identity and existence, specifically the African
identity. it deals with our ability to transition from one body or form to another, to make adjustments
from one situation to another, from one location to another (migration), to assume new identities
through language and culture as a result of a change of location or to take on different identities in the
virtual space (social media).
It is an examination of (wo)man’s ability to transition from one state to another.
The faces present in the work are cut out from hair styling posters which are present in most salons
around Lagos Nigeria where I live. The way women respond to these posters imitate this idea of
transitioning; when a woman visually observes these posters, through imagination she assumes the
image of wearing a specific hairstyle by replacing her face with the one on the poster through
imagination. This action imitates and enforces one aspect of re- occupying space and through this the
hybrid portraits are formed. Each face acts as a different body/ space albeit being one person.
